CLAIR

GINA GOLD (EMCEE)

I've been a Clown, a Gymboree teacher, I had a job feeding penguins at the aquarium. I've been a drama teacher, a really awful waitress, a student teacher, a car saleswoman, a health insurance saleswoman and a case worker for Vietnam Vets. All my life I have been afraid to really be my true crazy artist self. The closest I came was my stint as a stripper in the 90's (not a very good one but a stripper nonetheless). I was surrounded by crazy artist women in San Francisco. I worked at a place called the Lusty Lady and although I didn't particuarly like nude dancing, I loved being around eccentric women. I could finally claim my rightful place as a free spirit. Although I wound up selling my soul for that job, I learned a lot about being myself. That was then, now I am a mommy trying to live an honest authentic artist life. I hope to teach my child what I've learned from my mistakes and my triumphs, I hope she learns to speak up for herself and tell the truth. I want her to stand tall and never let anyone knock her down. I hope that she learns that God is within her and as God breathes, so does she. I am Gina Gold and this blog is my truth, I hope you enjoy it.

MAISA DUKE & ENERGIA DO SAMBA

Maisa was born in the America's capital of the African Diaspora, Salvador, Bahia Brazil and as far as she can remember, dancing is what she enjoyed most. Maisa started entering and winning dance contests when she was ten years old. Her ability to move her perfectly toned body to the complex, frenetic polyrhythmic beating of samba music has never been done with such beauty and grace in the SF Bay Area.
Maisa immigrated to the U.S. in 1998. She has been teaching dance for over 10 years. In 2000, she founded Energia do Samba Dance Company. Her dream is to share Samba with the world. The name Energia do Samba (The Energy of Samba) was chosen by Maisa because it is the energy, or more specifically, the positive energy of Samba, that she believes is the essence of Samba. Energia do Samba's dancing is the embodiment of that energy. Prior to the birth of Energia do Samba, Maisa performed with many dance groups in California. Maisa Duke/Energia Do Samba has performed at many celebrity functions, including Robin Williams' 50th birthday and events for the late Christopher Reeves, and former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown at City Hall, Warriors basketball team, San Francisco Giants games, Academy of Sciences in S.F., California Music World in Oakland, Ethnic Dance Festival, The Queen Mary in L.A, for Pele, the most famous soccer player in the world, and many, many other events.
Maisa Santana Duke Queen of San Francisco Carnaval 2002
ENERGIA DO SAMBA was founded in 2000 by Maisa Duke, the director and choreographer of the group. What distinguishes Energia do Samba from other Brazilian performance groups in the United States, in the strong influence of Bahia. Most people are familiar with the Rio (from Rio de Janeiro) style samba.
Due to the proliferation of samba schools throughout the world, it is rare to see Bahia-style samba outside Brazil. Bahia-style samba is characteristically more playful and joyful, as compared to the Rio style, which is often accompanied by lyrics that tend to be serious social commentary.

SIMONE CAMPBELL

Karen Ripley describes her as "exciting, energetic, full of life. She warms the audience up to each other. Not an easy thing to do. Killer smile."
Simone Campbell was once asked if she could pinpoint the exact moment when she knew she wanted to be a comic. The other question was, "What was the first album you remember buying with your very own money?" It didn't take long for the brash and busty San Francisco comic to come up with an answer to both; "Robin Williams". “I was surprised that I didn't have to think about it more. But I remember clearly going out as soon as I had the money and buying Robin Williams’ album, "Reality, what a concept". I was hooked”
Surprising even herself, today Simone finds herself in a dual role, of comic and activist. Simone performs for many charities and benefits, while always shining a light on the power of leading with intention, a way of living that has garnered her international attention from London to Uganda. Simone is featured in the soon-to-be-released book by London writer, David Watters, “NEVER BLEND IN, The legacy of Harvey Milk. A collection of interviews with LGBT role models. Keep an eye on this one. One of this generations fastest rising stars in gay comedy.

2009 Women's Dance & Performance Pavilion Line-up

In 2009, the NectArena Women's Stage went on a one year hiatus to prepare for the 40th anniversary of the SFLGBT Pride Celebration and the 10th anniversary of the Women's Stage.
